Layering with merino clothing in Winter

On the coldest of days the right layers can be the difference between a fun adventure and a cold and miserable child. My little girl likes to play outside rain, hail or shine so the right layers are important to me.

Here’s how I dress her to enhance her body’s natural ability to stay warm.

Base layer - I always use a fibre with the ability to wick sweat away from her skin. This is where merino wins every time. I never use cotton because it will retain the moisture and will actually make her cold.

Middle layer - This is the insulating layer and is the most important layer in keeping her warm. I usually opt for my premium merino for this layer, for example the Rose top that’s pictured here. Sometimes I use a thick fleece jumper but it’s usually merino.

Outer layer - This is the wind block or rain protection. I love my mother-in-law’s hand knitted jumpers for this layer (with a rain coat overtop if it’s wet). But you might have a puffer jacket or something similar to use as an outer layer.

What layers would you not go without?
